"Just think outside the box" - the classic phrase frequently used by anyone looking for a quick shortcut. Those 5 words are like nails on a chalkboard for any true creative. If you need to think outside the box, who has the box? What rules magically drift upwards in the air like dandelion wisps? Where are we keeping the hidden restrictions?

For Justin Tedford, owner of Framework, and Two Rivers Creative, creativity has a more free-form approach.

"The good news is that there is no box. No one has the magic formula for creativity. You can have as many or as few rules as you want." - Justin Tedford

Framework: Where Ideas are Everything

Whether you are a professional photographer, or a hobbyist at heart, photography classes at Framework offer an in-person, immersive, artistry-focused learning experience in Cedar Rapids. At Framework, it's not about your gear; all you need is one amazing idea.

"The strongest photographs begin with ideas, not scenes. Think of the idea as the lead actor. Emotion and meaning are designed first, with settings, lighting, and gear as the supporting actors of the concept." -Justin Tedford, The Concept Comes First: Building a Photograph from an Idea, not a Scene.

Meet Your Instructor: Justin Tedford

Justin's jovial spirit takes center stage in classes. His expertise shines through in a way that is humble and encouraging, not demeaning or strict. During his career at Photo Pro, Justin taught photography classes for 7 years. His wisdom goes beyond setting up lighting rigs and aperture settings. He deeply cares for the individual visions for the unique projects his students strive to complete.

Beyond his classes, Justin writes blog posts for Fstoppers, where he shares hot takes, tips & tricks, and the inspiration behind some of his biggest projects. Additionally, he has completed three books: Iowa: Land Between Two Rivers; Vanishing America: A Journey Through the Forgotten Relics of Route 66; and The Art of Seeing: Developing the Photographer's Eye. But his favorite completed project is called "Lost in Orbit", which explores mental health from the perspective of veterans. Justin himself starred in the images as he roamed small-town Iowa, dressed in a Soviet flight suit, and an astronaut's helmet.

Projects Without a Box

As a veteran himself, Justin often uses art to express the depth of emotion in the human experience. His art raises awareness for veteran's mental health, and he often showcases the overlooked beauty of small-town Iowa. As a teacher, his unique art, especially from his Lost in Orbit project, reveals to his students that art is a story that cannot be tamed into (or out of) a box.

Whether you are brand-new, or a seasoned photographer looking for a fresh perspective, break down the boxes and join a class at Framework today!
